DAVID MITCHELL MEMORIAL AWARD
FOR PUBLIC SERVICE

The
David Mitchell Memorial Award is intended to be considered annually in
remembrance of David and to recognise an individual in his name who has
displayed high standards and values in giving voluntary service to the
community.
The
Award will be a framed certificate given at a special club dinner to the
recipient. It will have no monetary value but the recipient will be invited to
bring one or two guests to attend the dinner at the Club’s expense.
At
the dinner other local dignitaries may be invited as appropriate and a brief
summary of David’s achievements will be given. A Copy of the certificate will
be kept in an album which will be part of the Club’s archive records The
award will be managed by the Club’s Secretary, Administrator and President
awho will form the adjudication panel.
Club Members should forward nominations to the Club's Secretary, Administrator or President giving details of the nominee’s voluntary achievements which will be summarised on the certificate. Nominations should be received by the end of January each year for consideration of the adjudication panel.
David Mitchell was born in 1930.
In his childhood he developed an early passion for engineering and
craftsmanship. He was one of the first people to graduate as a nuclear engineer
from Queen Mary’s University and joined Rolls Royce in 1956. He became
Export Director of the Company and was awarded the CBE in 1992 for his services
to British exporting enterprise.
David gave his time and commitment also
to many other charitable and service activities. He was a founder member of the
Rotary Club of Great Missenden and was its President in 1987/1988. As a Rotarian
he supported many initiatives to help and involve young people in humanitarian
and technology
activities through competitions and scholarships.
He was an active member of the congregation of St John
the Baptist, Little Missenden for
many years.
In addition he was a member of the Worshipful Company
of Engineers of which he was made a
Liveryman in 1985 and Master for 1998/9.
However, David will be best remembered for his
wonderful humour, his capacity for friendship and his concern for the welfare of
others. It is for these attributes that the Rotary Club of Great Missenden is
proud to sponsor this David Mitchell
Memorial Award for public service.
Also to acknowledge the great support
given to David throughout the 56 years of their married life by his wife,
Winifred, and by their children Caroline and Eric.
